Print, cut and apply

What is Direct to Media?

Direct to Media (DTM) is an umbrella term for decoration in which a design is printed or cut from a suitable transfer film or other medium and then applied to the product with heat and pressure. It works well for crisp logos, personalisation and effects that are not always achievable with direct printing.

We select the medium according to fabric composition, colour, stretch, end use and the desired appearance. Options include printable full-colour film, flex, flock, metallic, glitter and thicker brick finishes. This gives each design the right balance of detail, texture and comfort.

Why choose DTM at AJDN?

Multiple possibilities in one production process

01

Material choice

Choose from flexible printable film, flock, glitter, metallic and thicker three-dimensional materials.

02

04

Broad application

Depending on the medium, DTM can be applied to T-shirts, sweatshirts, sportswear, jackets, bags and other textiles.

05

Technical advice

We assess the substrate, stretch, dye migration, dimensions and end use before recommending a film or transfer.

06

Fulfilment available

Combine DTM with neck labels, hangtags, packaging, stock management, dropshipping and international shipping.

From artwork to finished product

How DTM production works

Step 1

Artwork check

We check resolution, vector paths, colours, dimensions and the intended position on the product.

Step 2

Material selection

We choose the correct print or cut film and application method for the fabric, stretch, use and required effect.

Step 3

Print and cut

The design is produced, precision-cut where required and carefully prepared for application.

Step 4

Press and inspect

Time, temperature and pressure are set for the chosen material before adhesion, position and finish are checked.

Materials and finishes

What can Direct to Media printing achieve?

Direct to Media printing gives brands and companies a wide choice of cut, printed and special-effect films. We select the transfer according to the artwork, textile and intended appearance. A clean company logo may need a smooth matt finish, while a fashion collection may benefit from texture, shine, metallic colour or a raised effect. Our advice also considers how the garment will be worn, washed and used.

Flex

Smooth and precise

Flex film is ideal for sharp names, numbers and logos with clear shapes. The material is accurately cut and applied. We match its thickness, stretch and colour properties to the garment and the application.

Flock

Soft and tactile

Flock has a short fibre structure with a velvet-like feel. It gives lettering and uncomplicated brand marks extra depth and a distinctive tactile finish.

Special effects

Metallic, glitter and reflective

Special films can shine, reflect or sparkle. They are attractive for limited editions, events, sports applications and brand details that are deliberately designed to stand out.

Print & cut

Full colour and complex shapes

Printable media combine full-colour graphics with accurate contour cutting. This makes gradients, illustrations and multicolour logos possible without building every colour as a separate layer.

Technical matching

Textile, transfer and press settings must work together

Cotton, polyester, blends and stretch sports fabrics respond differently to heat and pressure. Coatings, water-repellent treatments and dyes can also affect adhesion or colour. We therefore check the composition and intended use before choosing a transfer material. With polyester we pay particular attention to dye migration; with elastic garments we assess recovery and stretch.

Press settings are adjusted to the transfer and product. Time, temperature and pressure determine adhesion together. After pressing, we check the edges, position, surface and flexibility. A production test can be valuable when a material is new or the application is technically demanding.

From sample to fulfilment

A scalable process for brand details and personalisation

Direct to Media printing works for an initial sample, a small campaign or personalised orders with changing names and numbers. For repeat orders, we record relevant production details so material choice, dimensions and placement remain as consistent as possible.

AJDN can combine printing with garment sourcing, neck labels, hangtags, packaging, stock management and worldwide shipping. A brand therefore does not need to coordinate a separate supplier for every production step. We also compare DTM honestly with Direct to Garment and Direct to Film when another technique is better suited to the textile, artwork or quantity.
